On 26th October, 1917, 21st London of 142 Brigade, 47th Division took over the front line on the left of the Gavrelle sector, near Arras. They were still there on 4th November when two companies from both 23rd London and 24th London moved up to these positions to launch a raid on the enemy lines opposite at 4.30pm. The raid was carried out successfully and the two attacking battalions emerged from it with slight casualties compared with 21st London who took the full force of the German retaliatory artillery barrage. Ten men were killed and another two wounded. One of those killed was David Smith. |
